Feeling at Home at BSU

Hear from third year student, Harry, about his experience studying at BSU.

Harry discusses his impressions of campus, completing a study year abroad with Go Global and hopes for the future.

How would you describe Bath Spa University?

Bath Spa University has an inclusive, community feeling that I’m happy and proud to be a part of. The environment is encouraging and there is always an emphasis on the students. Independence and creativity are nurtured in all subjects and the services are responsive, so support is readily available.

Why did you choose to study at Bath Spa University?

The information I found online about the University was overwhelmingly positive and the modules for my course were appealing and exciting. I was also drawn towards the facilities and studio spaces.

How was your Open Day experience?

On first impression, I thought the buildings were modern and appealing with an open and spacious plan - perfect for studying. When I visited the Locksbrook campus I felt instantly as if it was somewhere I belonged and somewhere I could see myself, after that there was no real question about an alternative university.

The people at Bath Spa really made the biggest impression on the day, you could feel the students and the staff cared about the University and were never short of praise, which left me little doubt about my choice to study here. I felt excited about studying here instantly and that’s continued to grow since being here.

What opportunities have you enjoyed so far?

Thanks to the Go Global Team, I completed a study exchange abroad at ABK Stuttgart, a partner university of Bath Spa. Going abroad enhanced my studies and provided a new perspective on working within my subject. It allowed me to take on greater responsibility, adapt to a new learning environment, and challenge myself in ways that improved my independence and resilience. Living in a different country gave me a chance to immerse myself in a new culture that broadened my perspective on art and culture in an international setting.

This year I have also become a student rep for my third-year Fine Art cohort, I find it interesting to be able to have a good relationship with my peers and subject leaders, and to raise concerns as well as the great feedback I receive.

I’ve also enjoyed the weekly talks from external speakers, including artists and curators, who share insights into their practices. It’s been inspiring to learn directly from professionals working in the industry.

What is Bath like and what is your favourite thing to do here?

Bath is very safe with a nice buzz about it. I grew up in a quiet setting, so I find Bath has a great mix of bustling city living and rural spots. Newton Park campus sits away from the city centre and has its own wealth of nature, also the parks within Bath are a nice break from the busyness. Bath is very accessible by train and has good transport links with London and Bristol, great for study and day trips.

My favourite thing to do in Bath is to take a walk and explore the city. It has lots to offer, from touristy things like the Holburne Museum and the Roman Baths, to independent shops, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, and theatres, all worth trying!
What are your hopes for the future?

I strongly feel as if I’m being pushed to bring out my own qualities and improve daily, and I hope to continue growing as a person, and a student, until I finish my degree.

Being surrounded by like-minded people and being tutored by industry specialists has allowed me to see my passion becoming my profession. I am more aware of my options upon completing my degree, like further study and studio residencies. This was made possible by attending professional practice sessions on my course, which are run by the Careers Team who are helpful and available for appointments.

I plan to undertake further study to continue my learning and aid my development. I hope to work within fine art in the future, hopefully showing work by seizing opportunities and utilising networking connections.
