Amplified Publishing event explores groundbreaking technology

Friday, 29 April, 2022

Amplified Publishing, of which Bath Spa University is a key partner, is hosting an event on 29 April featuring panel discussions from industry leaders on future models of content creation, and showcasing groundbreaking prototypes that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve accessibility for communication.

The Amplified Publishing programme is part of the Bristol + Bath Creative R+D, a £6.8m government-funded creative industries cluster project designed to develop Bristol and Bath’s thriving creative economy.

Hosted at The Studio – Bath Spa University’s city-centre home for enterprise and innovation – for the first part of the day, the hybrid event will continue at Lost Horizon in Bristol, with a shuttle bus transporting attendees between venues.

Attendees will have an exclusive opportunity to explore the 'experience room' in The Studio, meet the prototype teams and interact with their projects, which include personalised one-shot lipreading for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients, AI sign language generation and translating sign language videos to talking faces.

The three panel discussions, running from 11:10am to 3:30pm, will explore themes ranging from how innovative technologies can reach new audiences, discovering new ways to generate income, ethical and inclusive practices in technology and the creative challenges of building communities.

The discussions will be followed by an experiential event at music and arts venue, Lost Horizon, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, where their prototype technology will capture the physical performance alongside a livestream of its digital twin, which users can join virtually using a virtual reality (VR) headset.

Kate Pullinger, Director the Centre for Cultural and Creative Industries at Bath Spa University and Head of the Amplified Publishing Pathfinder, said:

"We’re delighted to be hosting this innovative event, which has been a culmination of a year of research and prototyping by our incredibly talented team. Attendees will get an exclusive opportunity to learn about pioneering research designed to have real-life impact on ALS patients, ensuring that inclusivity is front of mind across industries.

"Funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council's (AHRC) for the Bristol + Bath Creative R+D has been critical in enabling us to explore the future of publishing across games, books, online, VR/AR and audio and it’s great to see the government investing in Bath and Bristol as the future of tech innovation in the UK."
