BSU partner to host weekend celebrating women in football

Monday, 19 February, 2024

Our partners Bath City Football Club are hosting a Her Game Too double-header weekend in March, celebrating women in football and also inviting new female attendees to Twerton Park.

Both men’s and women’s teams will play throughout this special weekend, with Bath City men hosting Farnborough on Saturday 9 March (3pm kick-off) and Bath City Women hosting Shaftesbury on Sunday 10 March (2pm kick-off).

The club is offering free entry to anyone under 16 who attends with a paying adult. Tickets can be purchased on the Bath City FC website.

Bath Spa University Disability Advisor, and Bath City Women’s player, Luanne Thornton said:

“It's always an exciting weekend when the women's and men's home games coincide and I am particularly excited that these two games will be dedicated to the Her Game Too Campaign. Since its establishment in recent years, Her Game Too has been influential in showing that in football that gender equality isn't just a women's issue, it's a societal issue.”

Her Game Too is an award-winning campaign that was started in 2021 and aims to create a safe and inclusive environment for all female supporters, where they feel empowered to engage with the game and are treated with respect both on and off the pitch.

Bath Spa University and Bath City Football Club are closely aligned in our mission to empower inclusivity and this special weekend of sporting action will allow students, staff and supporters to come together and appreciate the hard work that Her Game Too is doing.

Speaking about the impact of Her Game Too, Luanne went on to say:

“As a female football player, former referee, and passionate fan of the sport, I've encountered various challenges within football, from confronting stereotypes to celebrating the recent strides and successes. The upcoming doubleheader at Bath City serves as a platform to shed light on the Her Game Too initiative. Allocating this match to the campaign holds significant importance in showcasing the club's support for both the men's and women's teams. It provides another opportunity for young girls and women to attend matches, feel secure, and find inspiration, making it a truly meaningful occasion.”

Bath Spa University will be represented at Twerton Park across the weekend, with our football teams attempting the cross-bar challenge at halftime and our cheerleaders performing before the women’s game on Sunday.

Bath City Football Club play their home matches at Twerton Park, which became sponsored by BSU in 2023.
