British Library and Bath Spa University co-host MIX Conference 2023 in London

Tuesday, 4 July, 2023

On Friday 7 July 2023, the Bath Spa University-founded MIX Conference will be held at the British Library in London, marking the first time it has taken place outside of the University’s campuses since its launch at Corsham Court in 2012.

The one-day biennial MIX Conference will explore creative writing and emerging technologies and bring together writers, technologists, artists, practitioners and academics from around the world to explore the rapidly developing practice of storytelling in immersive environments.

This year, the event will be co-hosted by Bath Spa University and the British Library, in partnership with MyWorld. The Conference also coincides with the British Library’s Digital Storytelling exhibition of digital literature and emerging formats, which highlights digital publishing over recent years, and includes a virtual reality showcase.

The main themes of the 2023 MIX Conference will focus on interactive and locative works, text in immersive media, digital and film poetry, narrative games, digital preservation, archiving and curation, and storytelling with AI. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to experience VR works of poetry and literature.

Kate Pullinger, Professor of Creative Writing and Digital Media and Director of the Centre for Cultural and Creative Industries at Bath Spa University, will be part of the team bringing the event to life once again this year. Kate is no stranger to the world of digital storytelling following the success of her smartphone-based, personalised digital ghost story, Breathe, launched in 2018. Talking about this year’s MIX Conference, she said:

“It's incredibly exciting to be at the British Library in London for our first off-campus edition of MIX, Bath Spa University's biennial conference on creative writing and technology. The British Library is at the forefront of thinking about how to collect and archive digital literature, and MIX coincides with their wonderful new exhibition, Digital Storytelling. We are looking forward to a day of talking and thinking together.”

With London as its backdrop, MIX 2023 will celebrate innovative and experimental writing and predict what new forms of digital storytelling may arise in the near future.

The keynote speaker for 2023 will be Adrian Hon, co-founder and CEO at Six to Start - the brains behind game-like stories and story-like games, including the world’s best selling smartphone fitness game, Zombies, Run!
