Bath Spa University named as seventeenth most environmentally friendly university in the UK

Bath Spa University has moved up to 17th place out of 151 in the People & Planet University League 2023/24 in recognition of its sustainability credentials.

This marks an improvement on last year’s ranking of 18th place and sees the University remain in the 1st class category of the UK’s only comprehensive and independent league table to rate universities on their environmental and ethical performance.

Each year, People & Planet – the UK’s largest student campaigning network – assesses universities against key areas. This year’s 14 key areas included sustainable food, waste and recycling and energy sources, as well as staff and student engagement, environmental policy and strategy and water reduction.

Among its top results, Bath Spa University retained its 100 per cent score for environmental auditing and management systems and was also awarded 100 per cent in the staff and HR section, reflecting the way that sustainability has been embedded throughout its culture. The University also jumped up to 87.5 per cent for carbon reduction this year, compared to 78 per cent last year.

Professor Georgina Andrews, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Bath Spa University, said:

“Sustainability is one of the Bath Spa University core values. We are delighted that our environmental and ethical performance has once again been recognised with a first-class People and Plant award. We are committed to continuous improvement in this area, and our new Sustainability Policy will further our ambition to be one of the first UK universities to achieve net zero.”
