School pupils left buzzing after pollinator talk

Monday, 12 April, 2021

A local school has been learning all about the importance of pollinators, thanks to a Bath Spa University academic.

Dr Stephanie Greshon, Senior Lecturer in Conservation Biology, delivered a presentation to St Paul's Junior School in Shepton Mallet on Friday 26 March. Due to current restrictions, the talk was delivered via Zoom and live-streamed into each classroom – a total of around 300 pupils.

The talk, titled Why do we need our pollinators?, formed part of the school’s Science Week and covered the scientific background and importance of a variety of bee species. Stephanie also gave tips to the pupils on how they can help pollinators to thrive in their own gardens.

The presentation included a mention of Bath Spa’s campus at Newton Park and how it is used as an outdoor classroom, and Stephanie discussed her own love of science and career progression.

Speaking about her presentation, Stephanie said:

“It was really positive and I enjoyed it immensely. The children were very engaged and asked loads of questions – one question was lovely and asked how long it took me to know everything about bees!”

Stephanie will continue to work with the school, and plans to visit in person when Covid-19 restrictions allow.
