Over 360 BSU Students receive £500 Undergraduate Scholarship for outstanding A-Level results

Tuesday, 26 March, 2024

More than 360 Bath Spa University students have received a £500 undergraduate scholarship provided by the University, rewarding them for outstanding achievements in their A-Levels.

The Undergraduate Scholarship is a one-off payment of £500 received by those students who have applied through UCAS and achieve better than their predicted grades, or achieve outstanding results of at least AAB at A-level or equivalent.

Some of the students who qualified for the scholarship this academic year have been discussing the importance of the additional funding.

Megan Hopkinson, currently studying Business and Management spoke of her delight when receiving the scholarship:

“I was ecstatic when I found out I was receiving the fund as well as I felt like I was being rewarded with something tangible for all of the hard work I put into my A-Levels. I used some of the money to treat myself to things I typically cannot afford without a fund such as this, as well as putting most of the money towards my accommodation payments.”

The Scholarship rewards those students that have achieved or exceeded their predicted grades and gives them the chance to put the funding towards laptops, accommodation or whatever else they feel may assist with their studies.

Cyber Security student Sam Moss said:

"I was extremely happy when I received the money, as I found it to be very useful to put towards something I had already been saving up for. I spent the money on upgrading my PC, purchasing top-end parts."

Whilst many purchased laptops or PCs to assist with their courses, the funding also came in handy for art students, with Creative Arts Practice student Rhianna Yewen using the money to purchase materials for her work such as canvases, clay and paints.

Melissa Mulhall, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic Planning), said:

"As a University, we are absolutely delighted to be able to offer Undergraduate Scholarships to new students for outstanding academic accomplishments prior to joining BSU.  We introduced this scholarship to celebrate students' previous academic outcomes and success and I am very Bath Spa Proud that we have awarded 364 UG scholarships this academic year to our students who have excelled in achieving this special award.”

As well as discussing their pride at receiving the funding, many students also offered advice to future applicants, with confidence and mindfulness being highlighted as key traits.

Molly Brundle, an English and Drama Student said:

My advice for current A level students is to take care of your mental and physical wellbeing as well as studying. Studying is super important but it's only useful in moderation. If you burn yourself out now you won't enjoy university studying nearly as much.”

Charlotte Beattie, a Media Communications student, summed up her application experience:

“I was never sure if I really wanted to go to university but most of my friends were so I decided to look. When I found Bath Spa I was so excited because it's exactly what I needed. It's small and on the outskirts of the city in a really picturesque area which was going to be beneficial for my mental health. The media course at Bath Spa looked so good and I just couldn't help but fall in love with the campus.”
