The Design Council is dedicated to all design disciplines. As the UK's national champion for design, they showcase brilliance, lead on new thinking, evidence value and influence policy to create an environment for design to thrive.

The Design Council are the only UK institution dedicated to all design disciplines. They help government, businesses and communities better understand what design is and the economic, social and environmental benefits it brings. The Design Council's work focuses on three key areas: championing design, providing skills, tools and knowledge, and working in partnership.

Partnership

Bath Spa University and the Design Council formed a partnership in the summer of 2025 primarily to work with Design Council’s ‘Skills for Planet Blueprint’.

Skills for Planet is on a mission to equip designers with the skills needed to shape a regenerative, resilient and inclusive world for all, reducing emissions, pollution and waste and helping the natural world to flourish.

The School of Design are beginning to incorporate the Skills for Planet Blueprint with the ‘Introduction to Design Practices’ first year undergraduate module delivered to students across both Interior Design and Product Design. It is also being woven into other areas of teaching, including within the ‘Critical Design Thinking’ interdisciplinary modules delivered to all Locksbrook-based Design students at levels four, five and six.

By 2030, we expect that approximately 800 designers graduating from BSU will possess the critical green skills needed within design for the planet.
