Robot Lab
Community Learning
Learn the techniques of creating robotic structures with industry experts.
- Learn both basic welding skills and robotics coding.
- Bring together fabrication and coding skills to design, build and test your own creation
- Free for those who are over 19 and unemployed, on a low wage or over 50. Childcare also provided.
Join industry leading experts for a free, fabulously immersive 12-week course in creative robotics.
Have fun in the morning learning basic welding skills in the safety of our workshop at Old Printworks Art Studio in Radstock with free materials and expert guidance from Tom Cherry. Tom will guide you through basic welding techniques safely, helping you to develop robotic structures on a large project scale.
After six weeks the project will move to phase two where you'll learn more advanced fabrication techniques, mastering moving and adjustable parts.
In the afternoon we have a free course offer to join Dave Webb and learn the Arduino programming language. No experience necessary – you'll be supported to master basic robotics coding so you can input simple coding recipes and refine a control system for your robotics project.
This two-hour, 12-week coding course will compliment your fabrication course, giving you the opportunity to design, build and test your own creation.
This course is for all levels; from those who wish to enhance their own artistic work to beginners who would like to try a new process. All materials and safety equipment is provided – you just need to turn up and have a lot of fun.

Meet the team
Tom Cherry is a metalwork fabricator and expert at building sculptural structures. His work is precision engineered to withstand the harsh realities of rigging creative artworks in unforgiving outdoor conditions for a range of performance requirements, including circus and outdoor theatre. The quality of his making is evident in the smallest details, through to the spectacle of his large-scale artworks.
Dave Webb developed his creative technology and digital art practice alongside completing an MSc in Creative Computing at Bath Spa University. Dave works with artists and organisations to bring technology and creativity together to create impact, and exhibits his own work and collaborations with others. Dave runs workshops to demystify technology and make creative uses of code more accessible. With funding under the SWCTN Data Prototype grants, and the Studio Recovery Fund, Dave has worked with others to create real world impact with creativity and technology.
Ruby Sant is an experienced sculptor, designer and metal fabricator with speciality experience in creating large-scale, free-standing, immersive art work, circus sets and outdoor theatre, where complex and weatherproof engineering and rigging is crucial. Alongside this Ruby is a senior creative producer, facilitator and educator leading Bath Spa Universities’ Community Learning and Culture West teams and specialising in engagement and education work with traditionally hard to reach groups.
