Master the skills needed for an exciting career in Artificial Intelligence on this hands-on, industry-focused master’s degree.

  • Develop advanced skills in computer science and the expertise to design and build intelligent systems.
  • Level up your employability by capitalising on the growth of AI on this practical, hands-on course.
  • Gain valuable experience through working on real-world collaborative projects that solve problems using Artificial Intelligence.

Our Artificial Intelligence MSc degree has been developed to meet the huge demand for skilled professionals in the ever-evolving field of AI. Organisations are constantly looking for skilled professionals who can develop innovative and effective solutions that harness the latest technologies.

You’ll build on your computational thinking and general computing proficiency, while also focusing on core AI and Machine Learning concepts, tools and methods.

This AI Master’s course has been designed for computing graduates and professionals looking to advance their career with a specialism in AI.  You’ll develop the skills to design, build and evaluate intelligent systems using a wide range of tools and techniques.

In addition to the practical and theoretical expertise, you’ll also gain a deep understanding of the ethical and social issues surrounding AI and its shifting role in the world at large.

You’ll have the opportunity to apply your skills to solve real-world problems in both group and individual projects, which will strengthen both your initiative and resilience. You’ll graduate with valuable experience, high levels of expertise and ready to contribute to the digital economy.

What you'll learn

On this AI Master's degree, you’ll develop your computational thinking skills as you become expert in analysing and modelling complex problems.

You’ll develop your ability to conduct mathematical modelling to solve intelligence problems and work with advanced software development concepts.

Over the course of this AI Master’s degree, you’ll work with professional-level tools for communication and reporting, graduating well-equipped to step directly into the workplace.

The first trimester begins with an in-depth introduction to key principles of Artificial Intelligence, looking at technical concepts and different approaches, and then digging into details of how the core systems work in different implementation.

At the same time, you'll study advanced methods of computation that underpin various newer technologies, such as blockchains, cloud, parallel and GPU computing - many of which support artificial intelligence.

Trimester two builds on the knowledge and skills with a focused look at applying Machine Learning as an advanced tool for various problem domains.

The main module of the trimester is a collaborative project, where you'll work alongside other students towards creating viable commercial prototype that meets real-world requirements. You will start preparing for your final project or dissertation by learning about research methods.

As the final stage of your course, you'll complete either an individual Project or Dissertation in the final trimester.

You're assessed in a variety of methods across the various modules on the course.

Most assessments are based on practical coursework and projects asking you to design and develop a varied portfolio of digital solutions, including software prototypes, experimental interfaces, algorithm designs, and physical products.

Project work is often supported by research papers, reflective commentaries, reports, and presentations.

We combine academic study with practice-based teaching.

You’ll learn through a variety of activities including lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, with occasional online activities and discussion.

Course staff offer you access to a wide range of academic and practical expertise in varied specialisms, and insights from guest lecturer from industry and academia.

You’ll also benefit from one-to-one tutorials and peer-led learning activities.

We work with you to ensure that your experience and aspirations direct what you learn on the course, which then translates into effective professional practice and unlocks your potential.

To find out more about how we teach and how you'll learn, please read our information on Your Learning and Teaching at BSU.

Opportunities

Throughout your course, simulated work-based problems and scenarios require you to operate as if in a real-world work environment. The curriculum focused by our connections with local business, research projects and awareness of emerging technologies.

Industry connections may also provide opportunities for collaboration, tasking you with coursework and assessments that encourage you to develop solutions to existing business problems and issues.

While you can opt for a traditional postgraduate dissertation, this course also offers the opportunity to undertake large project for your final 60 credit module. Choosing the project enables you to devise a solution to specific issue or challenge taken from the real world or in response to a live brief.

Based on your own research and contextualisation, your critical thinking and creative problem solving skills will help plan and implement a solution tailored to the project sponsor. This capstone project further develops your academic and research skills, and provides you with invaluable practical and professional experience.

MSc Computer Science supports entry into a range of IT roles. You’ll be able to demonstrate your value to a range of companies quickly, and later build on the management skills gained during your study to compete for more senior positions.

Career roles include, but are not limited to:

  • AI and Machine Learning Developer
  • Data Analyst
  • Data Scientist
