Prepare for a career as a speech and language therapist who treats, supports and cares for those with speech, language, communication, eating, drinking or swallowing disorders.

  • Become a qualified speech and language therapist.
  • Gain practical experience through extensive placement opportunities.
  • Learn to work with professionals across different disciplines.

This highly practical Speech and Language Therapy degree covers the core theoretical knowledge and specialist clinical skills you'll need to enter the speech and language therapy profession. You'll also develop the academic study skills you need to earn a higher education qualification.

What does a speech and language therapist do?

Speech and language therapists treat, support and care for those with speech, language, communication, eating, drinking or swallowing disorders. They're in currently high demand, particularly within the NHS workforce.

Throughout this course you'll acquire the scientific thinking skills needed to succeed, and you'll learn how to incorporate clinical enquiry into your career.

In line with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) policy, you'll become competent in assessing and managing eating, drinking and swallowing (EDS) through additional placements and practical work on campus. When you graduate, you'll need to show that you can meet these competencies in order to enter the workplace as a practising speech and language therapist.

What you'll learn

This is a practical degree, and throughout the course you'll spend 18 weeks (550 hours) on a work placement. In the classroom, you'll be taught by both academics and practitioners with a wealth of professional experience.

Year one
In your first year you'll focus on basic biomedical science skills. You may also cover topics such as anatomy, inclusive education, clinical and professional practice, and phonetics.

Year two
In your second year you'll build on the skills you've already acquired and deepen your knowledge of the profession. Depending on your chosen modules, you may study topics such as cognitive and biological psychology, swallowing disorders and communication.

Year three
In your third year you'll focus more on professional practice, and you may explore working with different age groups, as well evidence-based practice and data analysis.

You'll be assessed using a range of assessment methods that test a variety of skills and tap into the real-world skills that you'll need to demonstrate in your future career. Where appropriate, you'll be given the opportunity to tap into knowledge and skills that you want to develop.

Assessment methods may include essays, presentations, projects, case studies, clinical formulations and practical skill assessments.

You'll be taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars and practical workshops.

Lectures will cover the theoretical content of the course, while seminars will focus on student-centred activities and exercises. In seminars you'll work individually, in small groups, and on larger group work tasks. Practical workshops will give you a chance to practice your clinical skills.
