RefWorks Support Ending on September 30 2026
After careful consideration, Bath Spa University will be ending its subscription to RefWorks, and access to the service and support will cease on 30th September 2026.
We encourage all RefWorks users to begin exploring alternative reference management tools.
Over the coming months, we will be contacting active RefWorks users directly to offer guidance and support with migrating your references to a new platform.
We understand that this change may cause concern and we are in the process of developing support to help make the transition as smooth as possible.
We recommend Zotero as an alternative to RefWorks.
- Students can download Zotero to their own devices. Staff on managed devices can request Zotero be installed on their machine.
- You can export your references from RefWorks into Zotero by following these instructions (select a folder or reference in RefWorks, choose 'Share' > 'Export references' and choose 'RIS format'; the downloaded file can then be imported into Zotero using 'File > Import').
Please note: folders, custom notes, PDF attachments and tags will not export from RefWorks along with your references.
It's recommended to migrate each RefWorks folder separately.
When navigating to the file created by Refworks during the export process (usually export.ris), use the following import options in Zotero:
- Place imported collections and items into new collection (leave this checked)
- Copy files to the Zotero storage folder
If you've selected the new collection option, Zotero will put all the imported references into a new folder named for the filename of the RIS file you exported from RefWorks (e.g. if your file was named export.ris, look for a new folder in your library called 'Export'; you can then re-name that folder).
