Bath Spa University awarded Knowledge Exchange funding for second consecutive year

Friday, 22 August, 2025

Bath Spa University has been successful in securing Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) from Research England (RE) for the 2025/26 academic year, receiving a total of £347,070.

This funding is given to universities that the government considers to be particularly active in Knowledge Exchange.  This is the second consecutive year of being awarded this funding and is also a significant uplift from the £303,000 awarded in the previous year.

The funding will be used to support activity in key priority areas of Knowledge Exchange at BSU, including consultancy, contract research, the use of our specialist facilities and equipment, supporting student consultancy activity, and short courses/skills bootcamps within the University’s dedicated Short Course Unit. The University will also be looking to seed fund specific Knowledge Exchange activities led by staff across different schools of study.

This increase in funding is a testament to the strategic focus and the generous, creative, and collaborative work across numerous teams, particularly the University’s Centre for Innovation and Knowledge Exchange and Research Support Office.

Hannah Whiting, Director of the Centre for Innovation and Knowledge Exchange, said:

“Receiving funding for a second consecutive year in recognition of our Knowledge Exchange work is an endorsement of the valuable activities taking place across the University in this area. We are committed to building on this momentum and supporting further initiatives in the year ahead.”

Professor Harriet Shortt, Head of Knowledge Exchange, added:

“I am absolutely delighted that BSU has been awarded HEI Funding again! This is such an exciting time for Knowledge Exchange at the University and, with the foundations that have been developed over the past few years, and now with investment from Research England, I am confident that we can build on this momentum and expand our Knowledge Exchange activities to create even greater impact for our staff, students, and external partners and communities. What a great start to the academic year!”
