Personal Statement
Nicky Hewer is a Lecturer in Inclusive Education and SEND, within the School of Education at Bath Spa University. She brings over 20 years of experience in secondary education, beginning as a Science teacher before moving into pastoral leadership, the role of SENCO, and later working as a Specialist Teacher for students with Autism and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
At Bath Spa, Nicky leads the MA Inclusive Education programme and delivered the NASENCO Qualification, focusing on helping education professionals connect theory with practice. Her doctoral research explores social injustice within the SEND assessment process.
Before teaching, her area of study was within Exercise and Health Science, with research examining quality of life measures and smoking cessation programmes. She also received a Travelling Fellowship to New Zealand to explore ways of increasing youth participation in sport.
Outside of work, she enjoys watching a variety of sports, is a regular theatre-goer, and loves travelling and exploring new places.
