- BA (Hons) Drama (Musical Theatre)
Student profile
Graduating year: 2027
Course studied: BA (Hons) Drama (Musical Theatre)
Second-year Drama (Musical Theatre) student Evie Williams was recently chosen to star in David Copperfield at the iconic Theatre Royal in Bath, and told us all about her experience.
What made you want to study Musical Theatre at BSU?
I came to an audition day at Bath Spa and immediately knew that this was the right place for me. I loved the community I could sense amongst both the students and the lecturers and professors, who all strove to achieve at a high level academically whilst keeping the creativity at their core.
I liked that the course wasn’t entirely one tone, unlike other Musical Theatre and Drama courses that explore only the physical aspects of what a career in the arts could look like, this one allowed me to study a wide variety of things, such as the ideologies of practitioners of theatre, the political and socioeconomic features of different musicals, and writing and directing my own work, allowing me much broader prospects beyond graduation.
What have you enjoyed the most about your course so far?
I have enjoyed exploring different genres of musicals through ensemble singing, picking songs from key writers of different genres and singing them as a group, expanding my abilities to identify different harmonies overtop of other singers. We recently worked on "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd" written by Stephen Sondheim within our exploration of the gothic musicals.
How did you find out about this opportunity?
I found out about the opportunity to perform at the Theatre Royal Bath through my lecturers, who were asked to reach out to students who may be interested in an original upcoming project the Theatre was working on. When I found out that the project was being directed by Olivier Award winning Director, Sally Cookson, I knew that this was a project I couldn't miss out on! I went along to a workshop with Sally and Composer John O'Hara in the University Theatre and loved it.
How does it feel to be performing on the Theatre Royal stage?
Performing on that stage is like nothing else. It's a theatre that is so rich with history, that has graced so many fantastic performers. I feel so grateful to be a part of that history, with my name, and the name of the 103 cast mates I share the stage with being added to a list of performers that dates back to 1806.
What are your hopes for the future?
In the future I look forward to expanding my capacities as a performer supported by the Drama and Performing Arts department at Bath Spa. Post graduation, I hope to continue to explore opportunities such as this one, on beautiful stages across the UK.
