Research conducted by Reminiscence Learning in collaboration with We Are The People and funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Who are we?

This project is being led by:

What are we aiming to do?

The research aims to explore experiences of the accessibility and inclusivity of a town in the Southwest for people living with dementia. This research will deepen understanding of dementia inclusivity, the types of services and support that can positively impact on this and the attitudinal barriers that exclude people living with dementia and their carers.

This project will explore important questions, including:

  • What are the day-to-day experiences of people living with dementia that make them feel excluded?
  • What is most important to people living with dementia and their carers in creating a dementia inclusive community?
  • What would support members of the community to include and accept people living with dementia?

How are we conducting the project?

People living with dementia, carers of people living with dementia and local community members who may or may not have previous experience of dementia will be invited to take part in this study in the following ways:

  • An online or paper-based survey of participants experience of local knowledge, understanding, support and services for dementia.
  • A series of four workshops involving discussions and exploration guided by the survey responses. Two workshops will be held for carers of people with dementia, one for community members and another for people living with dementia. The carers and community members workshops will be run as an informal coffee morning, and a creative workshop for people living with dementia will be run using ‘Life Story books’ as tool to support discussions. Topics may include experiences of inclusion and exclusion, concerns about safety and quality of life, the impact of community attitudes on inclusion.

Findings will be shared in an accessible report and at a community celebration event hosted by Reminiscence Learning.
