PhD Supervisors' Discussion Cafe
An informal community of practice for sharing, networking, collaborating and problem-solving.
The purpose of the Café is to create an informal peer-to-peer environment for supervisors (both academic and non-academic).
Together, we:
- Share best practice
- Crowd-source solutions to challenges
- Network, including with an eye to supervisory and research collaboration.
About the cafe
Sessions are free, online and bi-monthly. People can attend as and when they wish: there’s no fee or minimum commitment. The Café is open to all PhD supervisors from across SHAPE and STEM disciplines; participants should be actively engaged in PhD supervision (at a university or partner institution) or working in a Graduate College (or equivalent) providing direct support to PhD students.
Participants are actively encouraged to suggest topics, speakers to share reflections for discussion, and new ways of working and exploring together. We mean this to be a community that continually reflects and shapes what we do and how we work to maximise benefit for all. If you’re interested in chairing a session, we hope to pass this role around the network on a regular basis so do let us know.
Over time, we hope this will be a space to:
- Start important conversations about supervision and the postgraduate research landscape
- Co-produce additional events and publications
- Shape ideas for research into lacuna the community identifies as needing investigation.
