Taunton Maids Bursary
Studying music at BSU? You may be eligible for funding to further your studies in 2025/26.
The Taunton Maids Bursary assists recipients with funding the following activities or purchases related to their studies:
- Concerts for special occasions
- Instrumental or specialist tuition
- Scores/sheet music
- The purchase of instruments
- Music-related trips and activities.
Payments
The amount you are awarded depends on the level of financial support you have received from Student Finance England.
To ensure that you continue to receive the payments in each year of study, you must submit a report and receipts that demonstrate how you’ve used the bursary. Full instructions will be provided.
Undergraduate students
- Lowest household income band (under £25,000)
You will receive £1500 over three years* of undergraduate study
Year one: £400
Year two: £400
Year three: £700
- Middle household income band (£25,001-£35,000)
You will receive £1000 over three years* of undergraduate study
Year one: £300
Year two: £300
Year three: £400
- Top household income band (over £35,001) or no information shared with the university about household income
You will receive £500 over three years* of undergraduate study
Year one: £150
Year two: £150
Year three: £200
Postgraduate students
- If you are studying full-time, you may receive £300 per year
- If you are studying part-time, you may receive £150 per year
*Distribution of payment to recipients on the Professional Placement Year will be agreed separately.

Criteria
To be eligible for this award, you must be:
- Aged between 18-25.

You are a current student fully enrolled on the first year of an undergraduate or postgraduate (masters) degree at Bath Spa University for September intake.
- Studying one of the following courses:
- BA Music
- BA Commercial Music
- BA Creative Music Technology
- MMus Songwriting
- MMus Performance
- MMus Composition
- MMus Creative Sound and Media Technology.
- Your permanent residence before coming to University must have been in one of the following areas:
- Somerset
- North Somerset
- Bath and North East Somerset.
- You must be a Bath Spa University student studying at either Newton Park, Sion Hill, Locksbrook, Corsham Court or BSU London (Hackney). Students studying at our Educational Partner institutes are not eligible.
Applications
There is no application process for this bursary. Prospective applicants will be automatically assessed for eligibility in the early part of the academic year.
If you fulfil the criteria, you will receive a targeted email from the Scholarships and Bursaries Coordinator who will:
- Confirm the Bursary tier applicable to you
- Provide the Taunton Maids Bursary terms and conditions
- Invite you to register for the Bursary should you wish to accept it.
This process usually takes place in late October or early November, so if you believe you may be eligible, please do not expect to hear before then.
Eligible students will be invited to join the Taunton Maids Bursary in the early part of their first year of study. Students who do not register will not be offered the Bursary again in subsequent years. Later registrations may be considered, however, retrospective payments will not be applied.
