Wednesday, 29 October, 2025

Last week BSU headed to Glasgow for the Association for Learning Technology (ALT) Awards, taking home the prestigious Digital Transformation Award.

The ALT Awards, hosted by the leading professional body for Learning Technology in the UK, celebrates and rewards excellent research, practice and outstanding achievement in Learning Technology. Now in its 18th year, this year’s Awards Ceremony took take place during ALT’s Annual Conference, in Glasgow, on 23 and 24 October 2025.

The Award for Digital Transformation, in partnership with Jisc, recognises how organisations are enabling digital transformation. ‘Transformation’ is a progressive, systemic change in practices, processes, services and partnerships which improves the working lives of staff, has a positive impact on the student experience (including teaching, learning and assessment) and can be demonstrated to be sustainable in the broadest sense.

Receiving this award celebrates the work BSU has undertaken using Jisc’s Digital Transformation Maturity Framework as well as showcasing the extraordinary progress made with the University’s Digital Transformation programme.

Jisc commented on BSU’s win, referring to BSU as showing “exemplary leadership in digital transformation”. Published in a celebratory brochure featuring the winners of this year’s awards, Jisc added:

“Bath Spa’s achievement sets a benchmark for the sector, and we are proud to celebrate their transformation journey.”

Reflecting on the honour of receiving the award, Helen King, Director of Learning Innovation Development and Skills said:

“It was a privilege to represent BSU at the ALT Awards. We are always keen to share our practice across the sector and to learn from others. All the shortlisted nominees have been pioneering innovative and transformational approaches to digital, so I'm delighted and proud for BSU to be chosen to win the award.”

The only higher education institution to date to have made full use of the Framework, BSU has approached digital transformation collaboratively to develop a shared perspective on current maturity levels across a broad range of themes.

Speaking about the award-winning digital transformation at BSU, Rachael Johnson-Duval, Chief Information Officer said:

“The opportunity to lead this project, which benefited so much from our collaborative culture and the generosity of colleagues, alongside the opportunity to work closely with Jisc, has been a real high point for me in our digital transformation journey.

"We continue to benefit from our use of the framework as a means of informing strategy and quantifying progress across each of the themes. Winning this award, particularly considering the innovative approaches demonstrated by all the nominees, is something I am immensely proud of for BSU.”
