BSU students to flag bear at Women’s Rugby World Cup
Wednesday, 10 September, 2025Students from across Bath Spa University’s sports teams and Sports Media Production course will be flag bearing for the quarter final and semi-final games at the Women’s Rugby World Cup at Ashton Gate, over the next two weekends.
The Women’s Rugby World Cup has been an incredible success for the sport, with record attendances, viewership and scores at the tournament, showcasing the growth that Women’s Rugby has had since the previous tournament in New Zealand, four years ago.
With two of the four quarter final fixtures and both semi-final fixtures set to be played at Ashton Gate, BSU students have been given the opportunity to be flag bearers and go on to the pitch pre-game with country flags and World Cup flags, before enjoying the game.
Programme Leader for Sports Media Production at BSU, Lizzie Powell, on the opportunity given to students and the success of the tournament:
"This is such an exciting, history making event for our students to be part of, it’s already breaking records for attendance, viewership, and engagement. Kicking off the new semester by joining the biggest global celebration of women’s rugby we’ve ever seen has truly set the bar high!"
Canada is set to take on Australia on Saturday 13 September, and England is set to face Scotland on Sunday 14 September, before the semi-final fixtures take place on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September. England have been dominant all tournament long and have found themselves as strong favourites to win the World Cup for the second time, but Scotland will be hoping they can cause a major upset. If the rest of the tournament is anything to go by, there is sure to be high scoring, entertaining rugby.

Speaking with second year Sports Media Production student and BSU Rugby player Henry Watson, he explained the importance of BSU being involved:
“It is great that BSU is supporting a global event such as the Women's World Cup. It is a great honour for me, as a member of the men's team, to support the Women's World Cup so close to home at Ashton Gate.”
He continued:
“I have watched closely the England Women's team throughout the tournament so far. They have played with a great deal of skill and application and have rightly earned the title of favourites having been unbeaten since the last World Cup when they were defeated by the Black Ferns.”
All fixtures will be broadcast live on the BBC, so be sure to tune in early to see our students represent BSU proudly before the action kicks off.
