BSU renews sponsorship of Bath Safe Bus for another year

Wednesday, 11 March, 2026

Bath Spa University is proud to have renewed its sponsorship of the Bath Safe Bus, a Bath-based initiative offering support to anyone requiring a safe space while enjoying the city’s nightlife on Friday and Saturday nights.

The £10,000 sponsorship will help the multi-award winning project to continue its essential work, providing a safe, non-judgemental space for students and residents who are lost or in need of support. Medical professionals, security, and volunteers from Suicide Prevention UK and the Bath City Pastors provide first aid and mental health support, along with tea, coffee, phone chargers, sexual health products, period products, food, and even spare clothing to anyone who needs it.

Run by the Bath Business Improvement District, the Safe Bus has become an essential part of Bath’s nighttime economy, and can be found situated in the city centre outside the Orange Grove every Friday and Saturday between 10.30 pm and 4.00 am.

Since launching in 2023, it has provided support to hundreds of students in Bath, easing pressure on the NHS, and becoming a significant safety and welfare resource for BSU students and the broader student community.

Senior Pro Vice Chancellor, Rebecca Schaaf, said:

“Our continued support for the Bath Safe Bus reflects BSU’s commitment to working as a civic partner to enhance safety, wellbeing, and inclusion across the city. By investing in initiatives like this, we are helping to create an environment where students can thrive, feel confident in their surroundings, and remain connected to a supportive network both on campus and in the wider community.”

Solidifying its presence in the city, the Bath Safe Bus attends BSU’s annual Freshers’ Fair, alongside Avon and Somerset Police and Operation Bluestone - a pioneering initiative tackling sexual violence - to let students know that they’re never alone and spread the word about safety on a night out.

BSU students have also used their creativity to engage with the initiative, creating a six-minute video showcasing the positive impact of the Safe Bus. Media Communications students, Daisy Muchmore and Pippa Green, worked closely with the Bath Safe Bus team to promote the initiative, and the final video now sits on the Bath Safe Bus website, highlighting the amazing work everyone puts into the service.

Director of Campus Life, Liz Eyles, discussed its importance. She said:

“The Bath Safe Bus plays a vital role in helping our students feel safe and supported while enjoying evenings in the city. Feeling safe is fundamental to a positive student experience, and with 32% of students telling us they feel safer knowing the Safe Bus is there, renewing our sponsorship was a priority. It also reflects our commitment to working with partners across Bath to create a welcoming and supportive nighttime environment for students and residents.”

Nick Bishop, Bath BID and Safe and Secure BCRP Manager, said:

"We are extremely grateful to Bath Spa University for their support and sponsorship of the Bath Safe Bus. Keeping students safe and ensuring they get home safely after enjoying Bath’s nightlife is at the heart of what we do, and it’s fantastic to see BSU recognise the value of this work. Their ongoing support allows us to continue providing a welcoming ‘safe space’ for anyone who needs it, ensuring they feel cared for before heading home or back to campus."

Joining BSU in sponsoring the service are Bath College, University of Bath, Labyrinth Bath and Norland College, collectively helping to secure the future of the Bath Safe Bus and enabling it to continue providing vital support throughout 2026.
