BSU Students Cover Bath Rugby Ladies Game

Thursday, 15 January, 2026

First and second year students from the Sports Media Production course at Bath Spa University were given a unique opportunity to cover the Bath Rugby Ladies game against Exeter on 22 November.

As part of the new module “Sports on Screen: Presenting, Commentary & Interviewing”, 15 students were given a full-on experience of what covering a live sports event is like, from punditry through to photography.

First and second year Sports Media Production students have been filming Bath Ladies Rugby matches at their Lambridge ground in Bath this season, supplying the team with match footage for use by their Analysis Coach and Social Media Manager. However, on this occasion, Bath Rugby Ladies were playing one of their few games at The Rec, the iconic home stadium of Bath Rugby.

Students were provided with a hospitality box to set up lights and cameras where they produced pre-match, half-time and post-match analyses of the game.

They gave pitch pre-match and post-match interviews on the pitch with players from both sides, as well as commentating in the media stand on the play-by-play action.

Students also filmed the whole match in 4k from the top gantry, receiving advice from new BSU lecturer Andy Grierson on how best to capture live footage.

Lecturer in Sports Media Production, Digby Fox, said of the experience:

"To have 17 of us, two lecturers and 15 students, covering the match in so many ways - filming, photographing, commentating, being pundits etc - was fantastic.

Our first-years smashed the filming from the top gantry under colleague Andy Grierson's supervision, and the second-years did a fine job in all their roles.”

He continued:

"After filming the Bath Rugby Ladies at their Lambridge ground this season and at The Rec, we are big fans. They use our footage for coaching analysis and social media. Course Leader Lizzie Powell has been working hard at bridging this relationship and we would like to continue. It's fun and works a treat!"

Sarah Plummer, Bath Rugby Ladies Social Media Manager, added:

"Working with the BSU team this season has been great fun for us at Bath Ladies. They’ve provided us with the resources we need to help show off BRL across our media channels, as well as support our sport analysis systems - both of which help our club grow.

As a grass roots club, we’re grateful for all the support and professionalism the students bring to their work. We look forward to working with BSU in the future and we’re excited to create opportunities for their sports media students to gain hands on experience, like covering our double-headers at The Rec."

This industry standard experience is vital for students to continue their development as budding sports broadcasters, photographers, camera operators, producers, and editors. The Sports Media Production course has students filming in a cross section of sports around Bath and Bristol. The range is wide, from Bath City Football Club to Olympic swimming, bobsleighing, all the way through to Team Bath Netball in the NXT Gen League.
