BSU hosts annual Ramadan Iftar Celebration

Wednesday, 25 February, 2026

Bath Spa University was once again proud to celebrate Ramadan with its Muslim – and wider – student and staff community this week.

Hosting an Iftar celebration in the Student’s Union, attendees enjoyed talks about Ramadan and what it means to the Muslim community, as well as a range of Sudanese and Palestinian traditional dishes, served after a period of prayer.

Ramadan is a sacred month in the Islamic lunar calendar, observed each year by Muslims around the world. During Ramadan, Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset, refraining not only from food and water, but also from negative speech and behaviour. The fast is both physical and spiritual: a time for self-discipline, reflection, and compassion.

Fasting begins with a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor and ends at Iftar, beginning with dates and water, following the tradition of Prophet Muhammad.

BSU’s Iftar meal featured traditional Sudanese dishes served by the team at Sudafest, with a special guest chef, Majdi, also serving traditional Palestinian dishes to attendees.

Speaking about the event, Dr Norah El-Gohary, Muslim Chaplain at BSU, said:

“The Ramadan Community Solidarity Iftar is a moment for us to come together in the spirit of compassion, reflection and shared humanity. Ramadan is a deeply significant month for Muslims, a time of fasting, spiritual renewal and giving, and we hope this event offered others a chance to understand its meaning”

Lucy Coleman, President of the BSU Islamic Society were also in attendance at the event, adding:

"Celebrating Ramadan and other events like this are incredibly important for building community and acceptance on campus. As a Muslim student, I feel honoured to share our practices with people from diverse backgrounds. The core of inclusion lies in learning about others."

The event was attended by over 50 staff and students and external visitors - including Mohammed Saddiq, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset - exemplifying BSU’s strong sense of community and unyielding commitment to inclusivity.
