Student Wellbeing Services support students on University Mental Health Day
Thursday, 12 March, 2026March 12 is University Mental Health Day, a time to promote awareness of mental health among students, and break stigmas regarding speaking about struggles at university.
At Bath Spa University, the Student Wellbeing Services team work tirelessly to help students, through appointments, events, or even just a visit from one of the care dogs.

Mental Health Service Manager for SWS, Sarah Ireland, on the work they do:
“University can be an exciting time, but it can also bring real pressures for students. Many are navigating academic expectations, financial worries and being away from familiar support networks. Our role as Mental Health Managers is to support our team of dedicated Mental Health Practitioners so that students can access the help they need when they need it.
Our Mental Health Practitioners do an incredible job supporting students every day. They provide a compassionate space where students can talk openly about what they’re going through and work together to find the right support, helping students feel less alone in what can be a challenging time.
One of the most important messages for students is that support is there if they need it. Mental health challenges can affect anyone, particularly during periods of transition like university. Our practitioners work hard to make sure students can reach the right support at the right time.”
This year, BSU is holding an event on University Mental Health Day, at two separate campuses. SWS, the Students Union, Chaplaincy, Samaritans and Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust (NHS) will be in the Commons Atrium, Newton Park and The Street, Locksbrook Campus, between 10am-3pm on Thursday. People from across these teams and organisations will be available to talk, give advice and encourage students to be open about their mental health.
Speaking with Mia Jarvie, Graduate Student Wellbeing Services Engagement Coordinator, about the importance of awareness events:
“University Mental Health Day is an opportunity to bring our BSU community together to support one another and challenge stereotypes. As Student Wellbeing Service event coordinators, we've seen first-hand how hosting events encourages meaningful conversations, opens access to the service and contributes to further understanding of how university life can impact its students.
This year's University Mental Health Day is themed around 'Human Connection', we thought this could be a great opportunity to showcase some of the amazing support that BSU and other local charities can offer. We hope that these events will encourage students to reach out for support if they need it - we're always here to help!”
University Mental Health Day is just one of many awareness days throughout the year that is recognised at BSU.
