Student Money Week 2024

Monday, 4 March, 2024

This March marks Money Week at Bath Spa University, and we’re holding a host of activities and events for our students across our Newton Park and Locksbrook campuses to start the money conversation.

Being a student means spinning lots of different plates; from study to social, finances to wellbeing. Many of our students opt to work alongside their studies to help with the cost of living. Bath Spa University has a diverse range of student jobs across a variety of departments and many of our student workers make a fantastic impact at the University.

We caught up with some of our students to take a glimpse at what it’s like to balance work and study at BSU.

Maisie Hawkins, a third year BA History student, works in the Library as a Library Support Assistant (LSA) at our Newton Park campus. Her role involves supporting students, staff and anyone else who uses the library and its services. A normal shift for Maisie involves answering questions, helping people find books and keeping the library tidy and welcoming.

Maisie told us:

“I absolutely love my job; it offers great flexibility and is a lovely environment to be in. More than that, I am part of a wonderful team, I've met some great people that I'm happy to say are now close friends. If anyone is thinking of applying for a job at the library, I'd say go for it.”

We also spoke to second year BA Drama student, Liv Austin who works as a student ambassador for Bath Spa University. Liv’s job as a student ambassador offers lots of variety. She hosts campus tours and provides support on open days, contacts offer holders and answers any questions they have. She also visits schools in the Bath and Somerset area to talk to them about pathways to university.

We asked Liv about what it's like to balance her studies with her work:

“The most beneficial part of working for the University is that they understand us as students and our timetables. They offer shifts or opportunities and allow the flexibility to pick up the shifts that suit us. This makes it incredibly easy to find the balance between working for the University and finding the time for lectures and studying.”

Second year BA Business and Management student, Leo Buesst-Riboty was unemployed in his first year. He said:

“Although I had a lot of free time, I couldn’t do much because of my limited budget."

However, working for the Student's Union on Newton Park campus this year, Leo says that he can afford to go out more often with his friends.

Library Support Assistant and third-year BA Primary and Early Years Education student Sophie Hewitt feels her mental health and studies come first. She said:

“Working for the University is a great way to find that work/study balance. Being students ourselves makes the students who come to us with queries feel at ease. Bath Spa is a great institution to work for and they really do value our opinions and prioritise us.”

Bath Spa encourages students to work alongside their studies, picking up employability skills, earning extra income, and making new connections. Students can work as much or as little as they like to fit around their studies.
