BSU's Meet, Eat, Drink facilities gain sustainable upgrade

Monday, 27 October, 2025

BSU has updated their eating facilities with a new coffee supplier, Bristol based Triple Co. enforcing sustainable and ethical practice.

The popular Café Commons in the Commons building at Newton Park has recently undergone a makeover. The coffee available at Café Commons is now supplied by Bristol Based independent coffee roaster, Triple Co. Roast. Their mission is to ‘roast high quality coffee beans, via direct trade with bean farmers, whilst focusing on roaster-to-customer relations.’

Emma Jakins, Sustainability Coordinator at BSU, explained the reason for the switch in supplier:

“Bath Spa University is proud to support these ventures in keeping with our dedication to integrity and sustainability. Of course, the taste test was a large reason the coffee was chosen too!”

In July, BSU’s Catering team hosted a coffee tasting event, in which staff could help the team whittle down their favourite options.

Aligning with BSU’s practice and core value of Sustainability and ethical practices, Triple Co is sourced via true direct trade. They say;

“We aim to source all of our coffee via direct trade with farmers, or coffee that has been directly traded by suppliers. We believe in an ethical supply chain that rewards farmers and pays out bigger premiums for their hard work. We consistently pay 3x more for our coffee than the average New York ‘C’ coffee price.”

Not only this, but the coffee roasters support smaller farms – primarily a farm in Columbia and a farm in Brazil. They visit their farms every year to ensure there are no ethical issues taking place.

As well as the switch in coffee supplier, Café Commons has also had a refurbishment in style, with new wooden seating being added in the space, as well as new cups, coffee bean bags, and décor – with the changes made just in time for the new 25/26 cohort to enjoy.

Making this switch ensures BSU’s commitment and dedication to supporting people and the planet, whilst strengthening the university’s sustainability goals. You can read more about the University’s sustainability pledges here.
