Creative Computing students improve accessibility for all in Wells.

Thursday, 24 April, 2025

Wells is celebrated as one of England's finest cities, renowned for its beautiful cathedral, medieval charm, and small-town atmosphere. However, the reality for those reliant on mobility aids is that they cannot fully enjoy the city due to uneven roads, poorly maintained access routes, and a lack of accessible facilities.

Accessible Wells is a group dedicated to transforming the city to be more accessible while preserving its medieval roots. Our BSc (Hons) Creative Computing students have worked closely with this group to create a website that provides key information about their mission and the progress they have made.

Dr. Jake Hobbs, Creative Computing lead, commented:

“The Accessible Wells project has given our students invaluable real-world experience. They have developed a website according to a client brief and navigated the complexities of client relationships.”

Students on our Creative Computing course, including pathways in Web Technologies and Gaming, collaborate with industry partners on live briefs throughout their second and third years. These opportunities allow students to explore the wide field of creative computing and discover numerous career paths.

Through these projects, our students develop professional skills and enhance their portfolios, making them stand out from other Computing graduates.

Dr. Hobbs further emphasized the importance of the students’ work with Accessible Wells, aligning with Bath Spa University’s values of widening accessibility for all:

“Volunteering our time and expertise to support the Accessible Wells campaign has been a rewarding experience, and we are proud to have contributed to such a meaningful cause.”
