BSU student shines at NCC Awards
Wednesday, 5 November, 202520 October was a big day for Bath Spa University’s educational partner, New City College (NCC), which celebrated the NCC Student Achievement Awards at a ceremony in London.
Delivering a range of courses which are designed, assessed, quality assured and awarded by BSU, NCC is spread over several campuses in London and beyond, and has quickly become the fourth largest college group in the UK.
BSU was proud to contribute towards their Student Achievement Awards alongside nine other sponsors, celebrating the college’s values of opportunity, success, and community and recognising 35 exceptional students.
Amongst the award-winning students was Jenette-Marie Ogborn, who is studying BSU’s Counselling programme at NCC. Jenette was delighted to take home the Higher Education (HE) Student of the Year Award for her contributions to furthering inclusion in HE.

Fay Apps, NCC’s Senior Curriculum Manager for Counselling, discussed what made Jenette so deserving of the award:
“Jenette is a proactive student with a passion for inclusion and is always willing to provide input and suggestions on how studying at HE can be more inclusive. This includes meeting BSU link tutors, giving feedback to the head librarian, and introducing a student-led HE induction. We are very proud of Jenette!”
In attendance at the Awards were BSU staff, who travelled to London to celebrate alongside Jenette and show their support for all NCC’s deserving recipients. Jenette was congratulated in person by Pro Vice-Chancellor Partnership Strategy at Bath Spa University, Simon Haslett, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Mark McGuinness.
Having discovered she was neurodiverse later in life, Jenette completed her GCSEs as an adult learner at NCC. Passionate about showing others that everyone can shine with the right help, Jenette expressed gratitude to NCC and BSU for their ongoing support, saying:
“I feel so grateful to have a voice at places like BSU and NCC, where I can push for change and know I’m being heard. I’m really proud to be studying on a course validated by BSU, and sharing my thoughts as a student has been empowering.
Being recognised by this award has been such an honour, but I’m just as moved by the incredible work of other students across different subjects. Their passion and talent are so inspiring.”
Group Principal and CEO Gerry McDonald CBE concluded the evening by praising the award-winning students and questioning what it means to be outstanding. He said:
“We have seen the very best of New City College here this evening and we delight in our students’ achievement. We understand what it takes to be outstanding.
“But we also know, like New City College, you will not rest on your success but will continue to face new challenges with the determination that you have already shown; and that you will do so with the hope, compassion and optimism that are the true markers of outstanding.”
