International Students' Day
Monday, 17 November, 2025Today marks international students’ day, a commemoration for students all over the globe. From our partners to cohorts studying abroad and our international students that come to study in Bath, today stands as a chance to celebrate diversity and recognise the active parts that students play within our community.
Studying abroad and leaving your entire life behind can be incredibly daunting, but also very rewarding. Recent Business Marketing graduate Salma Ammar experienced that change first hand, after deciding to study over 3,000 miles away from her home in Dubai. Having known friends who had also taken the leap, the idea of living somewhere completely different was more of an exciting new adventure than a fear. Salma said:
“Honestly, it was more exciting than daunting! I really wanted to step out of my bubble and experience living in a completely different country where I didn’t know anyone. Of course, I was a bit nervous about being away from my family and living alone, but I’d heard from so many older friends that studying abroad was a life-changing experience. And they were absolutely right; it truly changed me in the best ways.”
For any student, moving to university and meeting so many people at once is an intimidating prospect, but especially when you have moved country as well. For Salma, it was the bond of a common interest that allowed her to meet like-minded people. From her first year of study she joined the BSU Volleyball society, staying for all three years until she was crowned society President in her final year.

Looking back at her experience, Salma reflected it was an overwhelmingly positive one. Bath being a beautiful place to live, and university being a chance to make friends and meet people from all different backgrounds. Offering advice to anyone considering studying abroad she commented:
“100% do it! It’s the best decision you’ll ever make. The city is amazing, and the uni is amazing too. My top advice would be to explore. Search up things to do on Instagram or TikTok, there’s honestly so much to do and see. The character development is insane, and Bath is honestly one of the best cities in the UK. It’s super safe, student-friendly, and absolutely beautiful.”
