Somer Store Celebrates Grand Opening

Tuesday, 3 June, 2025

BSU’s exciting new Somer Store celebrated its grand opening at the weekend, with hundreds of shoppers taking to the floor to browse the range of creations made by students, staff and local brands.

Following a successful preview day, the store is now open for all to enjoy and promises to be a central hub for creativity in the city.

Somer is backed by the Future Fashion Works (FFW), a BSU initiative partnered with The Fashion Museum Bath. Somer will serve as a dynamic testbed for the FFW’s plans to drive innovation and business growth in the sustainable fashion sector in the Southwest.

The initiative is inspired by BSU’s existing projects that offer support for graduates such as Emerge, a studio residency programme for graduates across art, design, performance, music and creative media and The Studio, a space for micro-businesses, BSU students, and graduates to work on projects and ideas that focus on creativity and technology.

Poppi Carter, Somer Merchandiser and Retail Assistant and a third year Fashion Marketing and Management student spoke of her excitement about the store:

“Being a part of Somer has been so exciting and special to be involved with, especially as a BSU student. I’m looking forward to collaborating with so many of the amazing creatives we have in Somerset and bring together members of our community surrounded by such exciting and ethical creations!”

George Morgan, second year BA Creative Arts Practice student, also added:

“Working with Jess and Tamara in the run up to Somer's opening has been brilliant! Seeing students and emerging artists get the opportunity to sell work and engage with new audiences has been a highlight for me. I'm excited to see Somer bring something different to Bath.”

Projects at Somer will be embedded into the BSU curriculum across a wide range of degree courses from Interior Design to Arts ManagementFashion Photography and Creative Arts Practice, offering ‘real life’ briefs with local and national businesses. This initiative has already kicked off, with a live project involving second-year interior design students.

BSU Pro-Vice-Chancellor External Andy Salmon added:

“We want to create the first destination in the Southwest that connects the makers, creatives and SMEs working in sustainable fashion and luxury retail and ensure our students are at the centre of that.”
