BA(Hons) Architecture achieves ARB and RIBA recognition
Thursday, 5 March, 2026The BA(Hons) Architecture programme at Bath Spa University has reached a new exciting milestone having achieved validation from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), alongside the already established Architects Registration Board (ARB) Prescription.
RIBA is a global professional membership body advocating for architects, encouraging excellence in architecture, and promoting equality and diversity across the profession. Their validation recognises that BSU’s course meets this internationally renowned standard in architectural education.
This milestone represents four years of dedicated development, with the Architecture team working closely with ARB and RIBA to ensure they met the highest standards possible to attain both accreditations. This was achieved through a rigorous review of student work, assessing the quality and consistency of the teaching and outcomes within the classroom and larger projects. Together, ARB and RIBA recognition marks an important step forward for Architecture at BSU, affirming the University’s standards, celebrating its strengths, and reinforcing BSU’s commitment to educating the next generation of architects.

Ian Parkes, Subject Leader for Architecture at BSU said:
“I’m incredibly proud that our BA (Hons) Architecture programme has been validated by the RIBA; it’s a testament to the passion and hard work of our students and teaching team. Their commendations mean a great deal, recognising the effort everyone has put into building a creative and compassionate space to study architecture.”
The distinctive strengths of studying architecture at the University’s Locksbrook Campus were acknowledged in the validation process. BSU’s extensive workshops, open studio culture and wide range of making facilities were highlighted as central to the student experience. Just as importantly, the review recognised the dedication, warmth and accessibility of BSU staff in creating a supportive student-led environment allowing them to thrive.
The Architecture programme at BSU takes a student-centred approach encouraging experimentation, critical thinking and hands-on making. Locksbrook Campus offers a rich and varied setting for architectural study, where students engage with multiple cultures of art and design, and develop their own individual practice in this space.
This recognition comes at an exciting moment for the School of Design, as it prepares to launch a Master of Architecture (MArch) in September 2026. The new postgraduate course will further develop BSU’s distinctive offer, shaping how architecture is practised and taught in the South West, while engaging with diverse design cultures and contemporary challenges.
