Monday, 22 May, 2023A Bath Spa University student has designed the poster promoting the 2023 Bath Fringe festival.
Sophie-Marie Webb is a third year Graphic Communication student at the University, and the festival organisers selected her design incorporating the iconic Bath Abbey to use on all the promotional materials for this year’s event, having been impressed by her imaginative and bold approach to the brief.
Bath Fringe co-director Steve Henwood said:
“We liked Sophie’s design particularly for the uplifting bright colours, and for turning the Abbey into something from a fairytale, or out of the glamorous Deco/Streamline era."
"Our best ever poster designs have often referenced the architecture of our fair city (last year the interior of the Roman Bath) but this is a first time for the Abbey, although it dominates the town like few other buildings.
“You can look forward to seeing this dancing violinist on all our branding from now to the end of festival time.”
Sophie said: “I came up with the design purely based on the relationship my little brother has with Bath. He always refers to it as the ‘Big City’ when we talk about Bath - almost like it’s a far off land.
“I wanted to capture this in my design, as well as making sure I was keeping Bath’s magic alive by incorporating historical elements, and my use of colours.”
“I’m so happy with the design and I can’t believe I won. I really didn’t expect it but I am so grateful! It’s amazing walking around the city and seeing it on display.”
Bath Spa students have been designing the posters for the Fringe for more than 20 years, as part of an ongoing relationship between the two organisations.
Professor Tim Vyner, Professor of Illustration at the Bath School of Design, has been part of the project for many years. He said: “Our final year Graphic Communication students have been designing the poster and visual identity for the Fringe Festival for many years.
"It's a really good opportunity for students to work on a professional project, and to present directly to the client."
"It's a really nice moment every year when the design has been chosen and the Fringe Festival has its own unique identity for that year."
