BSU and partners support greater equality and inclusion in football
Monday, 11 March, 2024One of Bath Spa University’s community partners, Bath City Football Club “The Romans”, hosted a special Her Game Too double-header weekend where both the men’s and women’s teams showed their support for greater equality and inclusion in football.
The weekend attracted over 1,300 supporters through the turnstiles at Bath City Football Club’s stadium, Twerton Park, with plenty of BSU representation at both games.
On Saturday, Bath City’s Men’s team failed to notch three points but support for the award-winning Her Game Too campaign was clear for all to see, with the men wearing Her Game Too shirts during the warm-up and plenty of off-pitch events highlighting the campaign.
Bath Spa University Film, TV and Digital Production students were on hand to conduct interviews with female club officials, including long-term volunteers, board members and even the club physio.
A number of Journalism students also turned their hands to writing match reports across the weekend, with this practical hands-on experience allowing students to get a feel for quick reporting and deadline management.
Sunday saw a more convincing display from Bath City’s Women’s team, with a 5-0 win over Shaftesbury providing the perfect accent to a memorable weekend.
The weekend was to raise awareness for the Her Game Too organisation, which was set up in 2021 by a group of female football supporters after a wave of discrimination had hit the football discourse.
Over the weekend, over 25 fixtures across the country were dedicated to the Her Game Too campaign and Bath City were front and centre in flying the flag.
Bath City Women’s home campaign has now come to a close, but the men will continue their charge towards the play-offs in the coming weeks, with the club providing a perfect chance for BSU students to gain practical knowledge in a fast-paced, professional environment.
