Thursday, 20 November, 2025

The Social Enterprise Law Clinic, a pro bono legal advice service run as a partnership between Bath Spa University, Stone King LLP and the Citizens Advice Bureau BaNES, has won the Pro Bono Award of the Year at the 2025 Bristol Legal Awards.

A staple in the local legal sector’s calendar, the Bristol Legal Awards recognises the outstanding achievements of law professionals in the Bristol and Bath area. The Pro Bono of the Year Award is given to an individual, firm, team, organisation, collaboration or network which has demonstrated a strong and dedicated commitment to the supply of pro bono work or the introduction of a pro bono initiative. Winners were announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on 6 November.

Established in March 2021, the Social Enterprise Law Clinic is the first of its kind in the UK, dedicated exclusively to supporting social enterprises. The clinic is supported by over 50 BSU law students and 30 volunteer solicitors across Bath. Students gain vital hands-on experience working alongside qualified lawyers from Stone King, enhancing their legal education while strengthening the clinic’s capacity to serve the community.

Tim Myers, Senior Lecturer in Law at BSU said:

“We are so proud of this award. Stone King has been the perfect partner, not just enabling the Social Enterprise Clinic to earn this recognition, but also to develop a reputation for providing top notch legal advice. Clients and community organisations have expressed to me how helpful the Clinic has been in allowing them to navigate legal hurdles and focus on making an impact in their communities. Stone King's participation and mentorship have also been a boon to our students, helping foster real practice skills so they can thrive in a competitive legal job market.”

Steve Goulton, Course Director for Law at BSU said:

“It is remarkable to reflect on how far the Bath Law Clinic has come since its establishment. What began as a small initiative has grown into a multi-partner enterprise, now proudly including the award-winning Social Enterprise Clinic. This success is rooted in the strong relationships forged with the legal community and the collective commitment of everyone involved – staff, students, and solicitors alike. None of this progress would have been possible without the leadership of Tim Myers and the outstanding dedication of Lucy Cooper, one of our exceptional alumni.”
