Media subject leader becomes Learning on Screen Trustee

Thursday, 17 April, 2025

Rebecca Feasey, subject leader in Media, has recently been honoured by becoming a Trustee for educational charity, Learning on Screen.

Learning on Screen is a charity and member organisation that has partnered with around 200 higher, further and school education member institutions to provide tools and resources for enhancing the use of moving images and sound in teaching, learning and research.

Learning on Screen provides a broadcast resource called BoB (Box of Broadcasts), a resource for university students to use for creative assignments or general research. BoB is an academically focused archive of audio and visual material broadcast in the UK, with an archive of 2.2 million broadcasts.

The BSU Library offers the BoB service to any BSU student or staff member, and allows them to view, record and create clips from over 75 TV and radio channels.

Helen Rayner, subject Librarian, commented on the useful resource explaining:

“We love telling students and staff about this database as it’s easy to use and spans so many terrestrial channels, as well as Sky Arts. To be able to access TV and Radio programmes going back decades, or from just a couple of hours after being broadcast, is a great service. Even some feature films appear on it, if they’ve been shown on TV.”

Helen continued:

“1000s of BoB programmes are watched by students each year, so all in all, a good resource”

Recently, Media subject leader Rebecca Feasey has become a Learning on Screen trustee. Looking for trustees to lead with technical innovations and strategic priorities, Bec volunteered as a long-standing user to the organisation. With a focus on dethroning the classic essay, she wants to stand as a driving force for more authentic assignments and the use of audio/visual material.

Speaking on her commitment to Learning on Screen, Bec commented:

“I have previously written for Learning on Screen's online Viewfinder magazine, while showcasing student writing on the platform as part of my module assessments. So too I have contributed curated playlists to the BOB database and encouraged BSU cohorts to do the same, all of which I hope to have proved useful to academic staff and students alike, not just to those already using moving images and sound in their learning and teaching, but to a myriad staff and subjects yet to embrace the opportunities afforded by the audio-visual archives.

The cutting edge Box of Broadcasts streaming service can be employed to make teaching meaningful, research accessible and assignments impactful. Indeed, I have worked with staff across our Schools to find ways to dethrone traditional forms of academic writing in favour of more authentic, industry facing portfolio work, with Learning on Screen and our Adobe Creative Campus front and centre of these developments.”

Rebecca’s appointment as a trustee for Learning on Screen highlights her long standing commitment to enhancing education through audio-visual resources. With its easy-to-use interface and vast archive of content, BoB is already a well-loved resource at BSU. If you are interested in using BoB, BSU students and staff can access it here.
