The Bath Spa community is always adding books to the shelf, with staff, students and alumni regularly publishing new work. To celebrate and promote the incredible talent of our community, we’re introducing our Bath Spa Books round-up.

Experiences of Punishment, Abuse and Justice by Women and Families - Dr Natalie Booth, Senior Lecturer in Criminology

With insights from frontline practice and from the lived experiences of women, the collection examines prison experiences in a post-COVID-19 world, domestic violence and the successes and failures of family support.

The Unreliable Nature Writer - Claire Carroll, MA Creative Writing

This collection comprises 18 stories with themes of late capitalism, climate anxiety and personal loss. Among them is The White Review Short Story Prize-shortlisted “My Brain is Boiling with Ideas”, in which a woman begins an affair with an android.

The House of Broken Bricks - Fiona Williams, MA Creative Writing

This is the story of a broken family, what they see and what they can’t say laid bare in their overlapping perspectives. It’s a tale of life in the cracks, because in the space for acceptance, of passing and of laying to rest, the possibilities of new energy, light and love are seeded.

Fiona’s novel was also winner of the Bridport Prize First Novel Award 2021.

Becoming Liz Taylor - Elizabeth Delo, MA Creative Writing

This debut novel tells the story of Val, a widow living in Weston-Super-Mare, who spends lonely evenings dressing up as the movie star Elizabeth Taylor. It seems to be a way of coping with the loss and trauma she’s experienced in her life. One day, when Val sees a pram left unattended on the seafront, on a whim she kicks off the brake and carries on walking…

Ten Birds that Changed the World - Dr Stephen Moss, Programme Leader for MA Nature and Travel Writing

From Odin’s faithful raven companions to Darwin’s finches, and from the wild turkey of the Americas to the emperor penguin as potent symbol of the climate crisis, this is a fascinating, eye-opening and endlessly engaging work of natural history.

The Bounce Back Journey Of Parenting: An Inspiring Collection Of Personal Stories - Helen Farmer, Associate Lecturer in Business and Management

In this parenting book, Helen interviewed Rebecca Scott, MBE, a champion of better work and work experiences in Bristol, from improving inclusion in one of the UK’s top universities, to design and delivery of inclusive apprenticeships for people with disabilities, hidden or visible, or other disadvantages.
