Sustainable Shopping in Bath

Sustainable Shopping in Bath

Tops tips to save pennies and shop sustainably at Bath Spa University

At BSU, we value sustainability. Finding ways to blend eco-friendly practices into fashion trends and shopping habits is a fantastic way to save some cash while helping the planet. We’re all about encouraging our community to take action and make a difference.

The NCFS—our university's National Centre for Fashion and Sustainability—is stepping up to tackle waste and global warming. In September, the NCFS was a flagship hub for Sustainable Fashion Week, which welcomed a flurry of events that tied in gorgeous and unique Fashion production and design with an emphasis on sustainability. A notable exhibition was Kirstie MacLeod’s Red Dress. Telling their story through embroidery, 380 embroiderers from 51 different countries left their mark on this one red dress. What’s not to love?

Let’s not forget about Bath itself! This city is bursting with charm, and that definitely applies to the shops. With all the benefits of shopping second hand, here is my rundown of Baths best second-hand shops for students:

First on the list is Mercy in Action on Chelsea Road. Just a stone’s throw away from our Locksbrook Campus, there’s something for everyone. I absolutely love the wide collection of DVDs, records and knickknacks, perfect for jazzing up your uni room!

Across the road is an independent second-hand shop, Help Us Give Support. (HUGS). This charity shop donates all its proceeds to Baths local hospital, the RUH. In here, you can find incredibly unique pieces, with retro and vintage clothes and bric-a-brac across the shop at affordable prices!

Both of the charity shops mentioned above are easily accessible for the students living in Weston and Newbridge area.

Moving closer to the city in George Street, you’ll find the Shaw Trust. Packed full of big brands with small price tags, students can find some absolute gems!

In the student-favourite Oldfield Park, you’ll find the shopping and eating area of Moorland Road. One of my favourite charity shops here is the British Red Cross. Something you may not know about the British Red Cross, is its partnership with popular clothing brand, Zara. In here I have found some incredibly stylish Zara pieces that are in perfect condition, for a fraction of the price!

With so many options, Bath is a great place for shopping stylishly and sustainably. Save your pennies, save the planet and gain some fun pieces to take home!
