Ocean Matters to Art and Design
Saturday 26 May, 2018 – Sunday 27 May, 201810:00 AM – 5:00 PM
The Bristol Aquarium, Anchor Road, Bristol BS1 5TT
An exhibition focussing on the issue of Ocean Plastic and featuring work from Bath Spa students and artists from across the South West, is being hosted at Bristol Aquarium.
The #oceanmatterstoartanddesign exhibition is conceived as a survey approach in understanding how the Bath School of Art and Design students and staff are engaging with the issue of ocean plastic. In 2016, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation predicted that by 2050 there would be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Currently it is estimated that a massive 8 million tons of plastic enters the ocean every year.
The intentionally short open call for submission was designed to involve a light-touch commitment from applicants, so that a snapshot of current work in progress could be quickly captured. Submissions were requested through instagram #oceanmatterstoartanddesign giving immediacy to the project, encouraging the sharing of environmental creative practice, and offering a platform for dialogue and communities of engagement to develop.
The exhibition launches as part of the Ocean Matters Event on May 26-27 2018. The event is hosted by Bristol Aquarium, and supported by Bath Spa University, the University of Exeter, ASLE, and in collaboration with charity partners Wildscreen and City to Sea.
