Bath Spa Professor unveils new book about teaching and research in education
Friday, 12 May, 2017A new book called Knowledge and the Study of Education – an international exploration is now available to purchase.
Edited by Geoff Whitty, Research Professor at Bath Spa University’s Institute for Education and John Furlong, former Director of the Department of Education at the University of Oxford, the book is about teaching and research in education in different parts of the world.
It identifies 12 different 'knowledge traditions' in the study of education and shows how the study of education in universities has not always been linked to the training of teachers.
The editors provide an overview of the study of education around the world, and other contributors discuss what education looks like as a field of study in Australia, China, France, Germany, Latvia and the USA.
The book originates from a research project funded by the British Academy, led by Geoff Whitty and John Furlong.
Professor Whitty joined Bath Spa University in January 2014 as a Research Professor in Education. He was Director of the Institute of Education, University of London from 2000 to 2010 and has also worked at the University of Bath, King's College London, Bristol Polytechnic and Goldsmiths College, as well as at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA and the University of Newcastle, Australia.
He has published widely for over 40 years and his other recent books include Research and Policy in Education (UCLIOEPress 2016).
Professor Whitty, along with Jenny Gore from the Institute for Education, will be giving a public lecture at Bath Spa University on Wednesday 17 May. More information here.
