Bath Spa University students head to Glastonbury for work experience
Friday, 23 June, 2017Nine lucky students from Bath Spa University will head 25 miles south to Glastonbury festival next week where they will work as either performers, provide technical support behind the scenes, or help as members of stage crew in the Glade area.
Holly Rawlings, first year studying Commercial Music Technology, will be performing under her stage name, Holly Morwenna, on the Spike stage on Sunday 25 June at 1:30pm.
Holly, age 19, was thrilled when she heard she had been accepted to perform at the festival.
She said: “I first heard about the opportunity when my lecturer emailed me personally to ask if I was keen to perform at Glastonbury. I really didn’t think I would be chosen to perform – it was so surprising and it hasn’t quite sunk in yet.”
Somin Griffin-Dave, age 19, is set to work as technical support during the festival.
Somin, who is studying Creative Music Technology at Bath Spa University, said: “Shout out to our Bath Spa University technical demonstrators, Jon, Leggy and Ed – they set up the relationship with Glastonbury and they are the reason I am able to go.
“I could be patching cables, I could be working on lighting and sound, I could be making cups of tea. Whatever I do, it’s going to be a really great experience.” Somin is also a composer and producer under the same of Somatic.
Other Bath Spa University students working at Glastonbury include Giovanni Bonelli, third year Creative Music Technology, who will be part of the Glade Lounge Crew.
Pablo Perez Zarate, PhD Music student, will be performing on the main Glade stage in the 2am slot on Sunday 25 June.
Liam Dunkley, first year Creative Music Technology will be filming the festival during the week.
Liam Wise, second year Theatre Production, will be on a technical placement alongside Somin, and Sian West, second year Theatre Production, Tobias Griffiths, second year Creative Music Technology and Joshua Thomas, second year Commercial Music, will be stage crew.
Holly has some advice for people who are thinking of applying to do Commercial Music Technology at Bath Spa University.
She said: “Bath Spa is brilliant, especially for Commercial Music. You don’t just focus on music, but you look at business and commercial aspects of the music world, and you have a chance to produce. You have a really good shot at being at Glastonbury like me if you study here and if you work really hard!”
Jonathan Savage, Technical Demonstrator and Lecturer in Music at Bath Spa University, said: “Work experience placements at high-profile events such as Glastonbury are great for our students to equip them for the world of work after they graduate.
"We are proud to collaborate with Glastonbury. As a university creativity is at the heart of what we do and we work with a wide variety of creative and cultural events across the region to ensure our students get the best practical work experience during their degrees.
“We have very talented students here at Bath Spa University and our students this year are no exception. I know they will enjoy being part of this world-famous event and benefit from this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
As part of the experience the students will be taking over the Bath Spa University Instagram and Snapchat accounts keeping those interested with up to date information.
