Creative Writing PhD student secures publishing deal
Wednesday, 13 September, 2017Jonathan Carr, a Bath Spa University Creative Writing PhD student, has secured a publishing deal with Scribe UK.
Scribe UK will publish Jonathan’s debut novel, Chicago Rising, in the UK and Australia in spring 2019.
Set in 19th century Chicago, the novel tells the story of the birth and rise of the city, as well as that of America and its relationship with the world beyond.
Jonathan who lived in Chicago for a year and spent a lot of time in New Mexico and Louisianna, drew on his own personal experiences when writing.
Chicago Rising opens with the Pointe du Sables family, whose part-French, part-African patriarch is the founding father of Chicago. Known initially as Echicagou, he is later displaced in history books by the man who takes over his house and erases his history.
The novel revolves around several generations of the Pointe du Sables’ family and those of key historical figures. Jonathan explores how the city of Chicago came into being– from the man who designed the city’s much-needed sewage system, to its first female reporter, to a historian determined to reveal Chicago’s true history.
Chicago Rising explores the nature of history and asks the probing and fundamental questions - whose stories deserve to be told and why, and whose stories are erased and why?
Congratulations Jonathan!
