Scriptwriting lecturer receives Judges Award in national playwriting competition
Monday, 4 December, 2017Bath Spa University lecturer and established playwright Sharon Clark has won the Judges Award in this year's Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting.
Run in partnership between the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester and property company Bruntwood, The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting is the UK's largest national competition for playwriting. The annual competition highlights the importance of new writing for theatre and the value of nurturing playwrights and their craft.
Sharon is the Creative Director of Bristol-based theatre company Raucous and lectures on the MA Scriptwriting course at Bath Spa University. She has worked with the Arts Council, Bristol Old Vic and The National Theatre, and written blog posts for The Guardian and articles for professional theatre magazines.
She was awarded one of three Judges Awards of £8,000 for her play Plow, which follows an African-American woman's pilgrimage across the US to where her husband and son died, and the media response to her journey.
Sharon was presented with her award at an awards ceremony hosted by BBC presenter Naga Munchetty on 13 November at the Royal Exchange Theatre.
She said: "I was completely overwhelmed to be awarded a prize from what is the UK's most renowned playwriting award. It is a career highlight and I look forward to developing the script with the Royal Exchange Theatre."
