Alumni telethon raises £13k to support students

Friday, 12 May, 2017

A team of 18 current Bath Spa University students made calls to thousands of graduates of the University and its predecessor colleges earlier this year.

This aim was to raise vital funds for the Student Opportunities Fund, which is used to support current and future Bath Spa students.

The telethon also provided a chance to catch up with former students and find out what the differences are between when they were studying at Bath Spa compared to what it is like now.

Donations came from across the generations.

Symone Weekes, who helped organise the telethon and works in the Development and Alumni Relations Office, said: “All donations received will go towards helping current students with financial support throughout their time at university. It will help give many of them the opportunities to achieve their dreams and unlock their potential.”

A total of £13,295 was raised through the phone calls.

Alums who wanted to donate were given the option to pledge £5, £10, £15 or £20 a month to support students through scholarships or bursaries. They were also offered the chance to get involved in Bath Spa’s thriving community through a number of initiatives including becoming a mentor to current students.

Symone continued: “The fundraiser was a really good way to get back in contact with former students and find out all the interesting things they have gone on to do after their time at Bath Spa. Our alumni are amazing and are doing so many things. One alum we contacted was currently working for the Ministry of Defence, and one was making music in the film industry.”
