Budding theatre producers to gain industry experience with Bay Productions

Monday, 18 December, 2017

Third year students from Bath Spa University’s BA Theatre Production course will soon be strengthening their experience as they undertake work placements with the course’s latest industry partner - world-renowned scenery building company, Bay Productions.

Students will have the chance to put the skills they have learnt on their course into practise during four-week long placements with the company whose portfolio includes the English National Opera, the Royal Opera House and the Ambassador Theatre Group.

Chris Britton, Subject Leader and Senior Lecturer in Theatre Production at Bath Spa University said: “We are delighted to announce our partnership with Bay Productions - a company that takes pride in being a ‘one-stop’ scenery building company for the opera, theatre, and television and film industries.

“This will give students the opportunity to integrate with specialists in the industry, and work on productions in areas that are suited to their particular strengths and interests in scenic art and much more. Working alongside highly experienced staff, they can expect to gain valuable experience in many key areas from logistics, right through to finishing and assembly.

“Simon Cornish, the Production Manager and Co-Founder of Bay Productions, has been very impressed with Bath Spa students who have undertaken placements to date and was therefore keen to forge an on-going partnership with us. This will go a long way to helping our students achieve their dreams to work in theatre production, and indeed the wider industry.”

Third year Theatre Production student Nieve Hughes said: “I undertook a placement with Bay Productions last summer which I thoroughly enjoyed. It gave me a brilliant opportunity to learn more about the day-to-day requirements of what it takes to be a scenic artist.”

Naomi Hutchinson also undertook a placement at Bay Productions alongside her fellow third year student Nieve and added: “It was great to work with such a professional team and I really enjoyed my placement. I would definitely recommend this work experience opportunity to others.”

Further Bath Spa Theatre Production placement partnerships include Theatre Royal Bath and the National Theatre along with top industry work placement providers including Cardiff Theatrical Services, Royal Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Welsh National Opera and many more.
