Bath Spa Ceramicist selected for UNESCO International Academy
Thursday, 5 October, 2017Practice-led PhD ceramics student Wen Hsi Harman has been selected as one of the 146 new members of UNESCO’s International Academy of Ceramics.
One of only two Taiwanese artists to be selected, Wen Hsi investigates cross-cultural identity through clay.
Wen-Hsi studied BA in Chinese literature before changing direction completely in 2009, by coming to study ceramics in the UK, where living away from her homeland has given her a clearer perspective of the culture she grew up in, and an ideal platform for addressing cross-cultural questions.
Creating a series of ceramic works based on handmade sculptural porcelain spoons, fingerprints, bananas, and traditional Chinese characters, Wen Hsi is exploring tensions of cross-cultural identity, between the East and the West.
Wen-Hsi will receive her the IAC Diploma at a reward ceremony at the IAC at the 48th IAC Congress, Yingge, Taiwan.
