Fashion Design student wins Chancellor Robe competition
Tuesday, 15 November, 2016Suzy Gallina, Fashion Design student at Bath Spa University, won a competition to design the robes for the University’s first ever Chancellor, Jeremy Irons.
The second year student wowed everyone with her playful bold design which reflected the creative, cultural and entrepreneurial ethos of the University.
Jeremy Irons is the University’s first ever Chancellor and he takes his position with the aim of inspiring the next generation of young creative minds.
The shape of the robe was developed by Suzy from a traditional caftan design, and the background colour used was traditional slate often affiliated to Bath Spa University. The robe has Moroccan and Venetian influences which are reflected in the colours and the hints of the Commedia del Arte harlequin, used within the detailing.
Suzy said: “I have woven the opposing ideas of seriousness and playfulness, old and new, tradition and innovation into a strong base of Moroccan and Venetian inspiration. The colours explore the dynamic between the exuberance and lavishness of ceremonial dress and the seriousness of the Chancellor."
The exclusive competition was held for current students and recent alumni to design the new Chancellor's robes. There were many high quality entries but Suzy’s design stood out from the rest and was personally selected by Jeremy Irons.
Suzy demonstrated that she had researched ceremonial and graduation robes extensively, and her final design fitted the brief perfectly.
Throughout the development, Suzy was able to have the opportunity to discuss ideas and work with bespoke tailor Carol Alayne who created the final outfit, and Bath Spa University, who did the experimental dyeing and embroidery, and executed the final detailed embellishment to Suzy’s design.
Suzy continues: “I have learnt so much from the process and want to thank everyone involved for their support.”
Suzy was awarded a prize of £500 for her creation.
