Talented graduate designs trophies for British Athletics League
Friday, 19 January, 2018A Bath Spa University graduate has designed a set of impressive trophies for the 2018 British Athletics League.
Carl Godfrey, who graduated from Bath Spa University in 2014 with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Communication was commissioned by the British Athletics League to produce a set of trophies to celebrate the winners of their annual competition.
He said: "I was flattered and excited to be asked to design the trophies. The British Athletics League wanted a bold, modern design that pushed the boundaries of a standard trophy. The trophy needed to represent all sports within athletics and be unique to the British Athletics League.
"I presented three ideas and the chosen idea was a trophy that formed the shape of an athletics track. Each ring of the track is a separate award of first, second and third place. It was agreed that each year the trophies would be returned and would come back together to form the athletics track."
Carl worked with a specialist trophy manufacturer to produce his design. The trophies were laser-cut from 25mm of solid aluminium and coated in gold.
After graduating from Bath Spa, Carl interned with Mytton Williams, a design agency based in Bath, and he now works there as a Graphic Designer.
He said: "I really enjoyed my internship. I was involved in a broad range of jobs from working on branding projects to conducting research. My internship and my degree have helped me tremendously. I'd unlikely have my job without my degree from Bath Spa University and its links with the industry."

The Graphic Communication course at Bath Spa University's Bath School of Art and Design combines the key areas of graphic design and illustration practice. Students are taught by design specialists and graphic communication practitioners, and have the opportunity to attend exhibitions, field trips and guest lectures from highly regarded national and international designers and illustrators. Students graduate with the full range of skills needed to operate in the dynamic interconnected creative industries.
Last year the Bath School of Art and Design celebrated 160 years of teaching art and design. Students and staff showcased their work at the University's Art Collection exhibition, and a series of walking tours, talks, exhibitions and interactive workshops were also held across the city in celebration.
