MA Fine Art student chosen for prestigious Exchange Residency

Wednesday, 13 June, 2018

Bath Spa University’s MA Fine Art student, Andrew Cunningham, has been chosen as the recipient of the prestigious 2018 Hauser & Wirth MFA Graduate Exchange Residency.

Designed to support emerging artists affiliated with Bath Spa University and the California Institute for the Arts (CalArts), the global initiative offers the two chosen recipients the opportunity to live and work for an intensive short residency in the other’s country. Hande Sever from CalArts will visit Bath School of Art and Design for the return residency.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Andrew, and one that is thoroughly deserved,” said Professor Anita Taylor, Executive Dean of the Bath School of Art and Design.

“The residency provides the two recent alumni of the MFA programmes an extraordinary opportunity and experience, supported by Hauser & Wirth, a leading international galleries of contemporary art and modern masters. We are thrilled to be part of the exchange once again, and look forward to welcoming Hande to the School.”

The programme, which was launched in 2017, encourages independent development of artistic practice while also providing support through contact with academics, curators, and artists through the auspices of Hauser & Wirth, CalArts and Bath School of Art and Design at BSU, fostering conditions for both reflection and spirited critical debate and creative practice.

Hauser & Wirth Somerset and Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles will support each artist in their respective location throughout their residency, and will encourage opportunities for the successful candidate to benefit from the activities at their galleries.

The residency will run at each location during a different period, allowing each candidate to provide support to one another during their stay.
