Friday, 11 May, 2018

Bath Spa University is embracing Mental Health Awareness Week (14 – 20 May) with a range of events and activities for both students and staff.

Held across the University’s Newton Park, Sion Hill and Corsham Court campuses, the aim of the Week is to highlight the importance of taking care of our mental health, and the ways people can help themselves and others to cope.

‘Stamp Out Stress Week’ – run by the University's Students’ Union, with assistance from its Student Support team - will focus on helping students cope with stress, from mental health Q&As, mindfulness sessions, and a quiet meeting room for tea, coffee and a chat, to two visits from therapy dogs from the Pets as Therapy charity.

There will also be activities geared towards illustrating how exercise can help alleviate stress with yoga classes, a ‘Row the Avon’ challenge and a soft tennis tournament running throughout the Week.

For staff, the Human Resources department have put together an equally insightful week activities with yoga and pilates classes, free massages, an introduction to mindfulness, mental health awareness sessions and free guided nature walks around the lake at Newton Park.

Staff will also be encouraged to trial 'Fewer Emails Friday' on 18 May. Following staff feedback, the wish to increase conversations with colleagues and reduce reliance on emails became apparent. 'Fewer Emails Friday' is designed to encourage staff to pick up the phone or speak in person and think about how necessary the email is.
