Planting power: Staff and students give growing a go

Friday, 4 May, 2018

There are always lots of exciting things cropping up on our campuses, just like our first Sion Hill vegetable garden which sprouted up outside the Art Shop during National Gardening Week.

Staff and students put their trowels to the test planting a variety of vegetable seeds at the launch event including radishes, lettuce and leeks. The green-fingered group, led by Art Shop Assistant, Clare Day, is inviting everyone to come and plant a seed at any time and help themselves to the produce that’s been planted.

The initiative was born out of ‘Piano, Piano’, a Bath School of Art and Design Action Group, working together on small creative community projects. ‘Piano, Piano’ is a reassuring Italian term which is generally used to encourage one to take it ‘slowly’ or ‘softly’ when trying to learn or achieve something.

Clare said: “We’re delighted to have set up a small area outside the Art Shop to grow vegetables. We hope that this will be the start of something special which will improve our collective wellbeing and sense of Bath Spa community and connectedness. Everyone is welcome to pick the produce from the little garden when it’s ripe and ready to eat.”

Kerry Curtis, Assistant Dean of the Bath School of Art and Design, attended the first ever planting session. Kerry, who is a keen gardener in her spare time, planted some special seeds which are predicted to grow into a certain big, bright and tasty treat over the coming months - keep your eyes peeled on the @BathSpaUni Twitter account to find out what they may be!
